Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities. Their mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education.

Research at Karolinska Institutet

Research at Karolinska Institutet is world renowned and spans the entire medical field, from basic experimental research to patient-oriented and nursing research.

The research fields in which Karolinska Institutet is particularly strong are the following:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Immunology, infection and inflammation
  • Endocrinology and metabolism
  • Public health
  • Care sciences

Karolinska Institutet today accounts for more than 40 per cent of all academic medical research in Sweden. The university receives a large share of the Swedish government´s strategic investments in advanced research, and external funding from the private sector is also on the increase. • Ulf von Euler 1970 - shared prize, "for their discoveries concerning the humoral transmittors in the nerve terminals and the mechanism for their storage, release and inactivation"
