Karolinska Institutet (Stockholm): A Medical University

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities. Their mission is to contribute to the improvement of human health through research and education.

Research at Karolinska Institutet

Research at Karolinska Institutet is world renowned and spans the entire medical field, from basic experimental research to patient-oriented and nursing research.

The research fields in which Karolinska Institutet is particularly strong are the following:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Immunology, infection and inflammation
  • Endocrinology and metabolism
  • Public health
  • Care sciences
  • Neuroscience

Karolinska Institutet today accounts for more than 40 per cent of all academic medical research in Sweden. The university receives a large share of the Swedish government´s strategic investments in advanced research, and external funding from the private sector is also on the increase. The economic conditions for successful research at Karolinska Institutet are thus strong and will continue to grow in the coming years.

Since 1901, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Eight Swedes have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and five of them were from Karolinska Institutet:

  • Hugo Theorell 1955 - "for his discoveries concerning the nature and mode of action of oxidation enzymes"
  • Ragnar Granit 1967 - shared prize, "for their discoveries concerning the primary physiological and chemical visual processes in the eye"
  • Ulf von Euler 1970 - shared prize, "for their discoveries concerning the humoral transmittors in the nerve terminals and the mechanism for their storage, release and inactivation"
  • Sune Bergström and Bengt Samuelsson 1982 - "for their discoveries concerning prostaglandins and related biologically active substances"
