Orientation
The International University Club Munich (IUCM) offers – in cooperation with LMU´s International Office- an intensive German course in September as well as in March. (“Study preparation course”, 4 ECTS credit points) It is not only a German language class, but is also meant to help prepare students for studying at LMU. The content is therefore heavily focused on academic life.
The Academic Year
The academic year in Germany is divided into two semesters (terms):
- winter semester/ term: 1st October – 31st March, and
- summer semester/ term: 1st April – 30th September.
Lectures at LMU Munich are generally held between:
- middle of April and middle/ end of July in the summer term, and
- middle of October and beginning of February in the winter term.
During the lecture-free periods no classes are being held.
Accommodation
The “Studentenwerk München” will provide participants with high standard single rooms with shared facilities. Student housing is situated in different locations in Munich, but all housing is easily accessible by public transport. The rooms are furnished with a single bed, cupboard space, desk and shelves and equipped with bed linen. Towels and kitchen utensils will not be provided, however.
 Cost of Living
Participants should budget about 400 € a month for food, depending on personal preferences.
Public transport costs vary according to the type of ticket or number of zones required. They range between approximately 30 and 55 € per month.
Residence permit fees can cost up to 100 Euros.
Additional costs for health insurance of about 70 € per month may occur.
Health Insurance
In Germany all students who are not yet 30 years old must have health and social security cover. In practice this means that before enrolling participants have to obtain a document confirming adequate insurance cover. This document will be issued by a German state insurance provider after arrival in Munich. If the participant´s current insurance policy is not valid for study purposes in Germany, it is possible to take out an additional insurance policy with a German state insurance provider after arrival.
 Visa and Residence Permit
Citizens of USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Israel or the EEA countries do not need a visa to come to Germany. All international students must hold a valid passport, however. Students, who wish to stay in Germany for longer than three months must apply for a residence permit in addition. This is issued by the foreigners’ registration office (Ausländerbehörde) after arrival. LMU´s International Office will assist participants with the procedure.
Facilities
Student ID-Cards
Registered students obtain a student ID card. This card allows access to library facilities and the student restaurants and cafes (“Mensa”). Other places like cinemas, theatres and museums, often offer special discounts for students.
Computer Access and Email Account
Registered students will receive their own campus email account and can access the internet using computer facilities in the central and departmental libraries. All buildings of LMU are equipped with wireless internet access (WLAN).
Libraries
The central library of LMU and the nearby Bavarian State library are the two most important libraries for academic work. In addition, many institutes at LMU Munich have libraries of their own.
Counseling Services
The Studentenwerk München offers various forms of counseling. Many religious communities in Munich also offer advisory services to international students.
Sports and Recreational Facilities
At the Student Sports Association, the “Zentraler Hochschulsport”, students of all Munich universities can choose from a wide variety of sportive activities. Details are published twice a year in the brochure “Hochschulsport”.
