The University

The University of Helsinki is one of the leading research universities in the world. Our multidisciplinary research has made us one of the key players in solving global problems. Students are closely connected to current research from the start of their studies.

UH is consistently ranked in the top 100 out of world's 15 000 universities. As a founding member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) , the university promotes science and research together with European's top research-intensive universities.

The university's goal is to become one of the 50 best universities in the world. On the journey towards the top 50, the University of Helsinki aims to build a better world by approaching global problems from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The university is especially strong in the fields of atmospheric physics, metapopulation biology, molecular medicine, mathematics of inverse problems, world politics and Russian studies.

UH was established in 1640 and has 11 faculties: Theology, Law, Medicine, Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Pharmacy, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry and Veterinary Medicine.

Of the University’s 35,000 students close to 3,200 are international, covering more than 110 countries. There are over 8,200 employees, of whom 4,700 are researchers and teachers.

The University of Helsinki carries out research of an internationally high standard. Our multidisciplinary research has made us one of the key players in solving global problems.

The University of Helsinki has regularly been ranked among Europe’s 10 to 15 best universities on worldwide ranking lists of research universities. Some 470 doctorates are completed annually and nearly 10,000 scientific articles or monographs are published yearly by the university’s researchers.

The University of Helsinki is among the most active universities in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures projects. The University is a member of 15 ESFRI roadmap projects, covering an extensive range of disciplines from humanities to natural and life sciences.  ESFRI participation and membership in other major international infrastructures, such as CERN, attests the University’s high quality of research and its broad, genuinely multidisciplinary research and teaching profile.

Language and Culture

The University of Helsinki offers several courses in Finnish language. Some of these courses are specifically designed for visiting students with no prior knowledge of Finnish. The aim of beginners’ courses (5 ECTS) is to offer a basic knowledge of Finnish in order to help the students to cope with some everyday situations. Courses are arranged during both academic terms. Information on registration procedures and other details is available from the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies, which is responsible for the Finnish language teaching for all the international students of the University of Helsinki.
