Vision

EuroScholars aims at contributing to the quality of academic research and international higher education by creating opportunities for scientific knowledge and culture exchange with a strong focus on academic research.

Mission

The aim of EuroScholars is to create a framework in which young talented researchers (international students) and senior European researchers work together on academic research. This will lead to attracting more international students to Europe.

History

Research at LMUEarly 2005 Leiden University conceptualized the first ideas on creating a new and innovative international study program focusing on high-quality scientific research. In dialogue with several European and American universities different opportunities were explored throughout 2005 and the first months of 2006. In attracting more international students to Europe a research-focused program seemed to best fit the demands of both the American and European institutions. Both parties saw the advantages of a program based on academic research. American students envisioning a career in academic research, can already gain practical research experience during their undergraduate period. For Europe, attracting these students, leads to an internationalization of the research environment and gives the host universities the opportunity to incorporate research into their study abroad options. The EuroScholars program also fits the expressed desire of the Lincoln Committee to increase the number of American students studying abroad.

European partners

Ever since the first ideas one of the main features of the program is the focus on highly talented students with a high GPA. The search was then for European partner institutions that carry out research at a level that is challenging for the students. But also for institutions that can guarantee a high quality program, one of the other basic characteristics of the program.
Partners were found in the nine of the best research universities of Europe’s mainland:

HeidelbergLeuven University, Belgium
Leiden University, the Netherlands
Utrecht University, the Netherlands
University of Helsinki, Finland
Ruprecht-Karls University, Heidelberg, Germany
Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich
University of Zurich, Switzerland
University of Geneva, Switzerland
Karolinska Insitutet, Stockholm, Sweden

Most of these universities are part of the League of European Research Universities (LERU) carry out academic research at the highest level and in many different fields. Study areas in which students can do research range from Language & Culture, History, Humanities, and Social Sciences to Physics, Biology, Biomedical Science, Law and Chemistry.

Unique study opportunities

For the American institutions EuroScholars creates an opportunity for those students that, early in their studies, express a strong interest in academic research. This type of student should to be cherished by the university as they will in the future be doing pioneering research, useful to the whole world. For these student there was not a fixed program in the past in which they could perform research abroad. EuroScholars provides this type of program, offering the possibility for both institutions and students to gain from a research abroad experience. For the students with much interest in scientific research this is a program that offers them that opportunity.

Enhancing attractiveness

HelsinkiThe European institutions, offer international students the experience of practicing European research and this also brings new insights from overseas to Europe. The program offers students a unique and individual perspective on how academic research is done in Europe and shows the benefits it has for international students.
Also, market research shows that a large percentage of the students studying abroad during their undergraduate period come back to the same university for their master’s and/or PhD degree. This way the EuroScholars program increases the attractiveness of research as a part of the European higher education sector.

The name 'EuroScholars'

The name EuroScholars both reflects the academic basis (‘scholar’) and the geographical location of the program in Europe (‘euro’). Participants in the program become true ‘EuroScholars’ when they contribute to European scientific research. ‘Euro’ also expresses the different characteristics of the program being an abbreviation for 'European Undergraduate Research Opportunities'.
